11 June 1950: When you are involved in a head-on collision with a bus and only survive it because you throw yourself across the seat to protect your wife you’re pretty much just happy to be a live. When you are left with a double fracture of the pelvis, a fractured collar bone, a left ankle fracture, a chipped rib, near fatal blood clots and the doctor says you’ll be lucky to walk again you’re pretty much just happy to walk. When you are Ben Hogan, though, you give it 16 months and then win the US Open in a 3 man play-off. The ‘Miracle at Merion’ a fitting tribute to a real fighter.
